Success in Friendly Scrimmage With English Club

The Bridgton Academy Soccer team kicked off its 2009 season with an international friendly in which they took on the Youth Minded Football Club out of Portsmouth, UK. The Wolverines, seeing the field for the first time together, experienced better results than a year prior versus the same club. Youth Minded Coach, Gareth Barnard was very impressed with the transformation from a year ago, saying, “Bridgton is much improved over last year’s club.” He went on to give his respect to Coach Mellon, who brings in his first recruiting class, and the Wolverines by saying, “these are some of the best players our guys will ever play against.” The game is a great opportunity for both squads, allowing the Youth Minded Club a chance to play in front of scouts, as well as for the Bridgton players who get to compete against an elite international group.
Coach Mellon, impressed with the play of his squad which had players in positions they were unfamiliar with said, “If this is the worst we play all season, the first day we are on the field, and we continue to improve every day, we are in for a very good season.”
The Wolverines look to build upon early season success as they take on the Saints of North County Community College on Sunday.
