The soccer team took to the field for a rainy home opener and beat Southern Maine Community College 3-1. Although the field was soggy, the team was determined to play through it. They faced off against SMCC and play was back and forth for the first few minutes of the game.
Eddie Demoya was able to dodge SMCC's defense and beat the goalie for the Wolverines first goal of the season. It didn't take long before Demoya added a second goal to put the Wolverines up 2-0. The poor conditions worked against Bridgton as a defender slipped pulling down an opposing SMCC player with him and awarding SMCC a penalty kick. They slipped the shot past BA goaltender
Garrett Madden for their only point of the game. With the Wolverines fired up after the penalty kick, they came out hard in the second half and secured the win with one last goal from
Aidan Harrison.
Coach Ashenfelter was happy with the day saying, "I was very proud of our first performance. We communicated very well and our work rate was first class. To take a group of individuals who had never met each other and in 10 days or so put it all together against good competition is a testament to the character and belief they have shown in the team concept. We certainly learned a lot about ourselves and have many things to improve on going forward, but we took a great first step forward. "
Up next the Wolverines will travel to Northfield Mount Hermon to take on the Hoggers at 4:00 P.M. this Saturday followed by a game at Springfield on Sunday at 12:00 P.M.
Here are a few shots from the game...
